David Levy, professor at the University of Washington Information School, will present a lecture, “Always On: Exploring Student Attitudes toward Information Technology,” on Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 7 p.m., in the Red Pit, KJ.  The event is free and open to the public.

His current research focuses on the effect that technological gadgets have on our quality of life and ability to concentrate. Constant access to email, instant messaging and other online distractions have led to what Levy calls an “onslaught of interruption and inattention.” His provocative ideas have inspired articles in The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, Time magazine, and The Washington Post. Levy has appeared on CNN with Anderson Cooper and on NPR’s “Talk of the Nation.” His book, Scrolling Forward: Making Sense of Documents in the Digital Age, was published in 2003.

Levy received his Ph.D. in computer science from Stanford University and holds a diploma in calligraphy and bookbinding from the Roehampton Institute, London. He served as a member of the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center for 15 years, researching the creation, use and nature of documents in society.
