Anna Oldfield, Asian Studies Postdoctoral Fellow and visiting assistant professor of comparative literature, presented at the 11th annual Women's History Conference "Gender and Power in the Muslim World" at Sarah Lawrence College on March 6-7. 

Her presentation, "Music, Power, and the Voice of Tradition: The Women Ashiqs of Azerbaijan," explored performances of traditional folklore by women as acts of resistance and transformation in conditions of conflict, war and loss. The conference, which focused on pressing issues of gender in contemporary Muslim societies, brought together scholars from the United States, Asia, the Middle East and Europe.
