The American Prison Writing Archive collects, catalogs and makes fully searchable essays written by inmates across the country and is part of Hamilton’s Digital Humanities Initiative (DHi).
Doran Larson, the Walcott-Bartlett Chair of Ethics and Christian Evidences, presented a paper at the Stockholm Criminology Symposium on June 19. “The Prison Writer as Witness: Introducing the American Prison Writing Archive” was part of a session on “Studies on prison and inmates.”
Larson’s presentation followed tours of prisons in Iceland and a two-week, half-credit course in which he and Frank Anechiarico, the Maynard-Knox Professor of Government and Law, guided 12 Hamilton students on tours of Swedish prisons and through interviews with prison officials, judges, police and politicians.
