Amherst College’s Theresa Kelley and Arielle Doering combined to throw a two-hitter and the Lord Jeffs shut out Hamilton College 3-0 in a NESCAC West Division game played in Amherst, Mass., on April 5.

Kelley (10-1) started in the circle, gave up one hit in four innings and struck out seven. Doering allowed one hit and struck out six in the last three innings for her first save. Donna Leet finished with a double, a single and two RBI. Kaitlin Silkowitz had an RBI single and Kelsey Ayers hit a triple.

Kelly Leonard '15 (3-8) pitched her eighth complete game this year and allowed just two earned runs on six hits for Hamilton. Melissa Kaknis '13 and Ellie Kiernan '15 had the hits.

Hamilton (6-12 overall, 0-4 NESCAC West) loaded the bases with no outs in the first inning, but was not able to capitalize. Olivia Gozdz '16 led off with a walk, Jenn Rougeux '14 reached on an error and Sam Miller '14 drew a walk that filled the bases. But Kelley got Kaknis to ground out for a force at home and struck out the next two batters.

Amherst (17-5, 2-2) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom half of the inning after Ayers led off with a triple and scored on Silkowitz's single. Kelley retired the side in order the next two innings.

The Jeffs added two more runs in the bottom of the third. Caroline Sealander began the inning with a single and Kelley reached on an error. Leonard got the next two batters out, but Leet plated both runners with a double.

The Continentals threatened again in the top of the fourth as they put runners on second and third with one out. But Kelley struck out the next batter and ended the rally with a pop out. Doering allowed a leadoff single by Kiernan in the fifth inning, but retired the next nine batters in order and clinched the win.

Hamilton and Amherst will play a doubleheader at Amherst on Saturday, April 6. The first game begins at noon.
