Hamilton College dropped its first two games of 2010 as the Continentals started their season at Lee County Sports Complex in Fort Myers, Fla., on March 15.
The Continentals (0-2 overall) lost 12-0 to University of Wisconsin-Platteville (5-2) in a game shortened to five innings due to the eight-run mercy rule. Hamilton was edged 7-6 by Lasell College later in the day.
Against Wisconsin-Platteville, Amy Appel ‘13 started in the circle for Hamilton. Appel pitched four innings and allowed six earned runs on 10 hits. Mandy Hyne ‘11 came on in relief in the fifth inning and allowed two earned runs on three hits. Cara Vennari ‘12 recorded the lone hit -- an infield single in the third inning.
Against Lasell, Appel pitched the entire game. She recorded three strikeouts and walked just one. The Continentals scored six runs on 11 hits. Hamilton grabbed a 3-0 lead with three runs in the top of the fifth inning on singles by Hyne and Melissa Kaknis ‘13, and a double by Leigh Sherrow ‘11. Sherrow, Hyne and Liz Farrington '10 all went 2-for-4 at the plate.

In the sixth, The Continentals scored two more runs on a Hyne single and a suicide squeeze by Rachel Rapoza ‘10. Lasell scored four runs in the bottom of the inning. Hamilton added another run in the seventh inning to go up 6-4 after a leadoff triple by Liz Reid ‘11. Lasell rallied with three runs in the bottom of the seventh after a leadoff home run, a base hit and two errors.
The Continentals play two more games on Tuesday, March 16, against Smith College and Curry College.
