Hamilton College was edged 5-4 by Smith College and lost 8-0 in six innings to Curry College at Cape Coral Sports Complex in Cape Coral, Fla., on March 16.
 
The Continentals (0-4 overall) rallied to get within one run in the seventh inning against Smith (2-2). Hamilton scored a run after a leadoff hit by Melissa Kaknis ‘13, and singles by Liz Farrington ‘10 and Cara Vennari ‘12, but couldn't plate the tying run.
 
Amy Appel ’13 pitched a complete game for Hamilton. Appel allowed five earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
 
Smith grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after a leadoff single. The Continentals tied the score in the bottom of the second after a leadoff walk, a single by Liz Reid ’11 and a run batted in by Vennari. Kaknis and Reid were 2-for-3, and Vennari went 3-for-4 at the plate.

Hamilton took a 3-1 lead in the third after a two-out hit by Rachel Rapoza ‘10, a single by Kaknis, two walks and another RBI single by Vennari. Smith took the lead for good with three runs in the fourth, and tacked on one more on in the fifth inning.
 
Against Curry (2-2), Mandy Hyne ‘11 allowed seven runs on seven hits and tallied six strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. Appel allowed one run on three hits in relief. The Continentals recorded one hit in the game.
 
Hamilton will play against SUNY New Paltz and SUNY Brockport on Thursday, March 18.
