Torchbearers of Democracy: African American Soldiers in the World War I Era, a 2010 book by Associate Professor of History Chad Williams, has received a CHOICE designation from the American Library Association.  The book, published by University of North Carolina Press, has previously received the 2011 Liberty Legacy Foundation Award from the Organization of American Historians and the 2011 Distinguished Book Award in United States History from the Society for Military History. 

 

CHOICE is a publication of the American Library Association. Every year they choose a number of outstanding titles from books they have reviewed during the previous year.  This year UNC Press had 17 books chosen for this distinction. In total, CHOICE selects about 600 books from the thousands they review each year to be Outstanding Academic Titles.
