Hamilton College finished fourth in the varsity eight grand final at the 2012 New York State Collegiate Championships held on Lake Whitney in Whitney Point, N.Y., on May 5 and 6.

Saturday's weather was cloudy with temperatures in the 40s and 50s and a 10 mph quartering tailwind. Sunday was sunny with temperatures in the 40s and 50s and a slight quartering tailwind. All races were 2,000 meters in length.

Hamilton finished in fifth place in the overall standings with 73 points. The Continentals edged St. Lawrence University for fourth place in the varsity eight grand final on Sunday with a time of 6:58.59. St. Lawrence finished less than a second behind in 6:59.42. William Smith College captured first place in 6:44.40, Marist College was second in 6:50.24 and Ithaca College came in third in 6:54.20. Hamilton qualified for the grand final with a second place finish in Saturday's second heat with a time of 6:51.16.

Kelsey Burke '13 was coxswain for the varsity eight, Dominique Paiement '12 was the stroke and Karly Moore '15 was in the bow seat. Seats seven through two in descending order were as follows:  Holly Bailey '12, Antonia Villa '12, Becca Straw '14, Helen Higgins '13, Allie Hoeltzel '14 and Leah Sorenson '14.

William Smith won the second varsity eight final on Saturday in 6:59.08, and Hamilton was second in 7:02.26. Sophie Breene '12 was coxswain, Keara Fenzel '14 was the stroke and Jess Pedersen '15 was in the bow seat. Seats seven through two in descending order were as follows:  Ally Kontra '15, Erin Gerrity '15, Annie Lindahl '15, Margaret Hylas '15, Virginia Slattery '12 and Rachel Johnson '13.

Hamilton took first place in the novice four grand final on Sunday with a time of 8:19.19. The Continentals won the second heat on Saturday in 8:22.10 to qualify for the final. Lily Siff '15 was coxswain, Emma Zanazzi '15 was the stroke and Meredith Garner '15 was in the bow seat. Hannah Zucker '15 was in the 3-seat and Grace Bowers '15 was in the 2-seat.

Hamilton competes in the 2012 ECAC championships in Worcester, Mass., on Friday, May 11.
