Hamilton College defeated the University of Rochester in the varsity eight on the Erie Canal in Rome, N.Y., on April 22.

All races were 2,000 meters in length. Temperatures were in the 40s with overcast skies and light, variable winds.

Hamilton is ranked ninth in Division III in the latest Collegiate Rowing Coaches of America/USRowing Coaches poll, and Rochester is tied for 14th. The Continentals' varsity eight is ranked second in the most recent NCAA New York Region rankings.

Hamilton's varsity eight took first place in 7 minutes, 1.76 seconds and Rochester finished in 7:06.38. Kelsey Burke '13 was coxswain, Antonia Villa '12 was the stroke and Karly Moore '15 was in the bow seat. Seats seven through two in descending order were as follows:  Holly Bailey '12, Dominique Paiement '12, Becca Straw '14, Helen Higgins '13, Allie Hoeltzel '14 and Leah Sorenson '14.

Hamilton's second varsity eight crossed the line in 7:20.32 and the Yellowjackets came in at 7:39.27. The second varsity eight has won all six of its races this spring.  Sophie Breene '12 was coxswain, Keara Fenzel '14 was the stroke and Virginia Slattery '12 was in the bow seat. Seats seven through two in descending order were as follows:  Ally Kontra '15, Erin Gerrity '15, Annie Lindahl '15, Margaret Hylas '15, Caroline Walton '15 and Rachel Johnson '13.

Hamilton's novice eight made it a clean sweep with a first place finish. The Continentals covered the course in 7:33.58 and Rochester finished in 7:54.97. Lily Siff '15 was the coxswain, Emma Zanazzi '15 was the stroke and Meredith Garner '15 was in the bow seat. Seats seven through two in descending order were as follows:  Jess Pedersen '15, Hylas, Hannah Zucker '15, Grace Bowers '15, Margaret Smith '15 and Gerrity.

Hamilton competes in the 2012 New York State Championships in Whitney Point, N.Y., on Saturday and Sunday, May 5 and 6.
