
Suzy Belmont '07 scored a career-high five goals to help lead nationally ranked No. 6 Hamilton College to a 13-11 win against No. 15 Montclair State University in an NCAA Division III championships tournament regional semifinal played at Gettysburg College's Clark Field on May 12.
Hamilton (16-2 overall) has won 16 straight games and will advance to an NCAA tournament quarterfinal contest for the third time in the program's history. The Continentals play No. 4 Gettysburg in Gettysburg, Pa., on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Bullets defeated Trinity (Conn.) College 13-8 earlier on Saturday afternoon. Hamilton ended the Red Hawks' five-game win streak.
Belmont caused three turnovers and collected two ground balls. She is third on the team with 32 goals this year and 93 in her career. Belmont scored the Continentals' first goal and recorded three of her five in the second half.
Kaillie Briscoe '09 and Liz Longley '07 chipped in two goals and two assists apiece. Nicole Tetreault '08 added two goals, one assist and two caused turnovers. Briscoe has 99 career goals and has set program records for most assists (41) and points (86) in one season. Longley holds the program record for most assists in a career with 86. Tetreault leads the team with 59 goals this year.
Kate Marek '09 scored her 14th goal and won four draw controls. Liz Benjamin '09 came off the bench to register her 12th goal. Both Jen McGowan '08 and Inga Stots '07 were credited with one assist and two draw controls.
Kalley Greer '07 made 13 saves, including nine in the second half, and picked up four ground balls. Tara Eckberg '08 and Liz Rave '10 led the defense with five ground balls apiece. Rave also won two draws.
Montclair State (14-4) scored the first two goals, but trailed 6-4 at the half. The Red Hawks pulled within one goal three times in the second half, but never drew even. Hamilton owned a precarious 10-9 lead with 9:28 left when Montclair notched its second goal of the game, but the Continentals ran off three straight goals for a commanding 13-9 advantage. Tetreault scored both her goals during the spurt and Belmont made it a four-goal cushion with 5:12 remaining.
Hamilton held a 34-29 advantage in shots and picked up 30 ground balls to the Red Hawks' 28. The Continentals committed 26 turnovers, but were whistled for just six fouls. Both teams won 13 draw controls.
