Charlotte Cosgrove '13 scored a spectacular goal in the fifth minute, and Liza Gergenti '14 stopped all three shots she faced to lead Hamilton College to a 1-0 win over Bates College in a NESCAC game at Bates' Russell Street Field on Oct. 1.
The Continentals (5-3-0 overall, 3-2 NESCAC) notched their second consecutive NESCAC win. The Bobcats dropped to 1-3-2, and 0-3-2 in the NESCAC. This was the first meeting in the history of the two programs.
Cosgrove had the ball well beyond the left border of Bates' penalty area just 4:27 into the game. She drove a hard left-footed shot from a tough angle that traveled over the hands of leaping Bates goalie Annie Burns '12, and found the side netting near the top right corner for her third goal this season.
Gergenti posted her third shutout of 2011 and the seventh of her Hamilton career. Hamilton outshot Bates 22-14, and held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Burns made a key save midway through the second half after a Hamilton corner kick to preserve the one-goal deficit. Bates' best chance to equalize came later in the half when Wally Pierce '14 fired a shot that Gergenti punched over the crossbar.
Hamilton travels to Williams College for another NESCAC game on Tuesday, Oct. 4.
