
Akilah Bond '09 broke school records in the long jump and the triple jump as Hamilton College competed in Cornell University's non-team scoring Deneault Invitational at Barton Hall on Feb. 17.
Bond won the triple jump with a mark of 11.51 meters (37-feet-9¼). She is a provisional qualifier in the event for the NCAA Division III Championships and her distance is the sixth-best performance in Division III this season. The old Hamilton record of 11.02 meters by Julie Elmuccio '03 had stood since February of 2000.
Bond finished eighth with a leap of 5.22 meters (17-1 ½) in the long jump. Chris Culver '85 had owned the previous school record of 5.16 meters since February of 1984.
Lauren Steates '07 took fourth place in the triple jump with a mark of 10.70 meters (35-1 ¼). Jen Orbaker '07 was third in the high jump as she cleared 1.55 meters (5-1). Amanda Salisburg '08 finished fourth among Division III athletes in the pole vault with a height of 2.85 meters (9-4 ¼).
Rachel Bennek '07 led the track athletes as she took ninth place overall in the 800-meter run. Bennek was the third-fastest Division III runner with a time of 2:23.83. Alex Americanos '10 was the fourth Division III sprinter across the finish line in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.27 seconds. The 1,600-meter relay captured second place in 4:15.41.
The Continentals travel to St. Lawrence University to compete in the New York State Collegiate Track Conference Championships on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 23 and 24.
