The Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity Scholarship

The Alpha Delta Phi Fraternity Scholarship was established by the Hamilton College chapter in 1999. Preference is given to students who are members, or descendants of alumni who were members, of that fraternity.

Alpha Delta Phi was founded in 1832 at Hamilton College by Samuel Eels (1810-1842). Initially established as a literary society, it evolved into one of the most distinguished of the original American college fraternities. Its chapters are leaders on their respective campuses.

Samuel Eels (for whom the Eels Residence Hall is named) most eloquently expressed the principal purpose of the fraternity: “this new association, with a true philosophical spirit, looking to the entire man, develops his whole being – moral, social and intellectual.” Special importance is attached to five areas: enhancing personal self-esteem; promoting constructive respect and caring for others with diverse backgrounds and personalities; developing leadership qualities and self-discipline; improving scholastic and literary skills; and, serving the school and community.

The scholarship is awarded to Hamilton students who are current members or legacies of any chapter of Alpha Delta Phi.
