The Sidney B. Bennett Memorial Scholarship

The Sidney B. Bennett Memorial Scholarship was established by the Class of 1967 on the occasion of their 25th Reunion in memory of Sidney B. Bennett, Class of 1928, who served as secretary of admission at the College from 1941 to 1971.

Sidney "Sid" B. Bennett was born in Brooklyn, New York, and grew up in Battle Creek, Michigan. His father, Sidney Bennett, was the founder and president of Bennett Oven Co. At Hamilton, Sid double majored in English and French and was an active member of the Psi Upsilon fraternity. He graduated in 1928 and worked with his father in Michigan. In 1939, Sid returned to the Hill to accept a position as Assistant to the President of Hamilton College. He became Dean of Admission at Hamilton in 1941, serving in that position for thirty years until his retirement. During World War II, Sid helped to administer, for a short time, the Civilian Pilot Training Program at Hamilton, an effort to "greatly expand the nation’s civilian pilot population by training thousands of college students to fly." Sid died in 1987 in Clinton, New York, having been a resident for over 46 years.
