The Florence and Harlan F. Calkins Scholarship

The Florence and Harlan F. Calkins Scholarship was established in 1964 by the family and friends of Harlan F. Calkins, Class of 1929. Upon Florence's death in 2001, her name was added to the fund. The scholarship is awarded at the discretion of the Scholarship Committee to a student of outstanding character and leadership.

Harlan Ford Calkins was born in Rochester, New York. A member of the Class of 1929 and the Psi Upsilon fraternity, he worked in Rochester as a lawyer following his graduation. He eventually became chairman of the Rochester Germicide Company (now the Rochester Midland Corporation), and a member of the firm of Harris, Beach, Keating, Wilcox, Dale & Linowitz. For several years, he served the College as a Trustee. Harlan died at the age of 55 in 1962 at his home in Pittsford, New York.

Harlan’s son, Harlan D. Calkins, graduated from Hamilton in 1954, as did his grandchildren, Katherine Calkins, Class of 1984, and Steven Swartout, Class of 1980.
