The DeSanctis Family Scholarship

The DeSanctis Family Scholarship honors the parents of Dr. Alfred L. DeSanctis, Class of 1939. It is awarded with preference given to students demonstrating excellence in the classroom while pursuing a “pre-medical school” course of study.


Alfred L. DeSanctis, Class of 1939, was born in Utica, New York. He graduated from the Utica Free Academy in 1935 and matriculated to Hamilton. While an undergraduate, he played violin in the Utica Symphony Orchestra as well as in a string quartet. He also performed numerous solo recitals. After graduating cum laude in 1939, Dr. DeSanctis worked as a federal bond underwriter in New York City and then joined the U.S. Army, serving in the intelligence branch during World War II. While serving in the Army, he attended Stanford University as a drum major. He played in the Stanford band and also studied the Dutch and Malay languages.

After being discharged from the Army in 1945, he entered Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he graduated in 1951 with an M.D. degree. In 1956, he joined the Massillon Community Hospital in Ohio and practiced there until his retirement in June 1997. In addition to his musical talents, Dr. DeSanctis was an avid tennis player and was fluent in Italian, French, Dutch and Malay. He studied Spanish and collected art until his death in 2009.
