The Emerson Literary Society Scholarship

The Emerson Literary Society Scholarship was established at Hamilton by the Emerson Literary Society (ELS). Preference is given to students who are members, or descendants of alumni who were members, of that society.

The Emerson Literary Society is one of the oldest private societies on the Hamilton campus. Named in honor of Ralph Waldo Emerson, and based on his philosophy, the Society was founded by a group of Hamilton students in 1882 (six weeks before Emerson's death). It was the first society at Hamilton to become co-educational and still remains one of only two mixed gender societies on campus. The Emerson Literary Society remains active today, hosting social events and presenting public programs.
