The Timothy B. Norbeck Scholarship

The Timothy B. Norbeck Scholarship, established by Timothy B. Norbeck, Class of 1960, is awarded to students who demonstrate need.

The original Norbeck Scholarship, whose gifts have supported need-based financial aid, has been in existence on an annual basis since 1996. The newly constituted Timothy B. Norbeck Scholarship will be fully endowed as of June 2019. The endowed scholarship was initiated in 2018 by Timothy B. Norbeck, Class of 1960, and will continue his thoughtfulness and good work in perpetuity. Tim is also the proud father of Carl, Class of 1984.

Tim Norbeck came to Hamilton from the Nichols School in Buffalo, NY. He played soccer at Hamilton for four years as goalie and fullback, and garnered first team All-New York State honors. Playing four years of hockey at Hamilton, Tim was the second highest scorer in the nation during his 1959-1960 senior year. He still holds the college’s record for most goals (40) and points (72) in a single season despite playing only 18 games. He was one of the three charter inductees into the Hamilton College Hall of Fame in 1973. Tim’s son, Carl Norbeck ’84, played four years on the Hamilton College hockey team, and was also Captain of the tennis team.

After Hamilton graduation and working in the steel industry for six years, Tim found his calling in the medical arena, first with the American Medical Association, establishing a field services office in St. Louis and then the Medical Student, Intern and Resident section of the AMA in Chicago. Tim then served as CEO of the Rhode Island Medical Society (1973-1977) and the Connecticut State Medical Society (1977-2006), the latter which granted him an honorary “M.D.” for his commitment and staunch advocacy of physicians and the physician-patient relationship. During his tenure at CSMS, he spearheaded the formation of numerous physician-owned entities including the Connecticut Medical Insurance Company (a professional liability insurer), MD Health Plan (a statewide HMO), the CSMS IPA (a statewide independent physician/practice association), CPRO (the Connecticut Peer Review Organization) and MD Advantage, a business-focused subsidiary of the medical society. Tim was the President (2003-2006) and CEO (2006-present) of the Physicians Foundation, an entity created as part of a national physician class action settlements with HMOs in 2003.

Tim’s extensive community service over the years have included coaching youth hockey in Rhode Island (including authoring a youth hockey coaching book), the St. Louis Narcotics Commission, the American Cancer Society - chairing the Connecticut Division and the National Committee on Field Service, the New Haven Regional Mental Health Association, and since retiring to SW Florida - Interfaith Charities of SW Florida and Meals on Wheels.

Having given more than 1000 speeches and authoring numerous Op-Eds and articles in his professional and volunteer life, Tim credits the English and public speaking courses, taken during his time on College Hill, for those accomplishments. His love of history and writing has also led him to branch out and author three fiction books.

A generous annual donor, whose gifts have supported need-based financial aid, this endowed scholarship will continue his thoughtfulness and good work in perpetuity.
