It is awarded with preference given to students from the Western and Rocky Mountain states including California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.

Christopher P. "Woody" Marshall graduated from Hamilton in 1990 with honors in economics. Woody was a member of Psi Upsilon and a four-year starter on the men's lacrosse team. After receiving his B.A., he started a career in finance, working in New York City until he left to pursue his M.B.A. at Northwestern University's J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management in 1996. That same year, he joined the California-based Venture Capital firm Trident Capital, where he worked until 2008. Since then, Woody has been a General Partner with Technology Crossover Ventures.

In 1998, Woody married Hamilton classmate Cynthia L. Carroll. The daughter of Frederick Carroll and step-daughter of Hamilton Life Trustee Christina (Nina) Carroll. Cynthia majored in anthropology at Hamilton and graduated cum laude in 1990. Following graduation, she went on to earn an M.A. from New York University in 1991. Cynthia has
had a long career in the field of education, serving as a national director for WorldTeach in Ecuador, as well as holding a number of Spanish teaching positions in the San Francisco Bay Area. Currently, Cynthia manages a family agriculture and livestock business based in Northern California.

The couple has actively represented Hamilton in the San Francisco area, volunteering in multiple capacities including with the Admission Office, Career Center and the Annual Fund. In July 2015, Woody was elected as an Alumni Trustee of the College.
