The David Douglas Hays Memorial Scholarship

The David Douglas Hays Memorial Scholarship was established in 1977 in memory of D. Douglas Hays, Class of 1925, by his wife, Helen I. Hays, and their children and friends.


D. Douglas Hays was born in Johnstown, New York. He entered Hamilton in 1921, majored in biology and geology, was a member of the Psi Upsilon fraternity, and participated in Honor Court, Charlatans, and the Executive Council. After graduating in 1925, Douglas earned a master's degree in industrial management from Harvard University. He married Helen S. Ireland and was manager of the Ireland Brothers Glove Company, as well as partner, for many years. He also served as president of the Johnstown Historical Society, member of the board of trustees of the Johnstown Public Library, and member of the board of directors of the Johnstown Cemetery and Albany Savings Bank. Douglas died in 1977 at the age of 75.
