The Thomas McNaughton Johnston Memorial Scholarship

The Thomas McNaughton Johnston Memorial Scholarship was established in 1992 by the Class of 1952 on the occasion of its 40th reunion in memory of Professor Johnston, who taught English at Hamilton from 1932 to 1972.

Thomas McNaughton Johnston was born in 1904 in Elfinwild, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Washington and Jefferson College with a science degree in 1926. After working for several years as a salesman for the American Radiator and Standard Sanitation Company, Professor Johnston returned to college to study literature, with a particular interest in 18th Century English literature. He earned his master's from Tulane in 1931. By 1934, he was appointed professor at Hamilton College and four years later earned his Ph.D. from Duke University. From 1969 until his retirement in 1972, he was Hamilton's Marjorie and Robert W. McEwen Professor of English. Professor Johnston died in 1986 in Clinton, New York.
