The Edwin J. Kenney, Jr. Scholarship

The Edwin J. Kenney, Jr. Scholarship was established in 1992 by Taggart D. Adams, Class of 1963 and a former Trustee of the College, in honor of Edwin J. Kenney, Jr., Class of 1963, Distinguished Teaching Professor of Humanities and chairman of the English Department at Colby College. It is awarded to a student who has shown an interest in teaching.


Edwin J. Kenney, Jr., a professor of English at Colby College, was born in Hoboken, New Jersey. He graduated from Hamilton in 1963, earning his master’s degree and doctorate from Cornell University. He joined the faculty of Colby College in 1974 as an associate professor, becoming a full professor in 1982. He was named as Colby’s first Distinguished Teaching Professor of Humanities in 1991. A writer, he authored Elizabeth Bowen, a biography of the Irish novelist. Professor Kenney died in 1992 after an extended illness. He is survived by his wife Susan and their three children.
