The John R. Munro Scholarship

The John R. Munro Scholarship, established in 1988 by John R. Munro, Class of 1987, and members of his family, is awarded on the basis of need, with preference given to entering students from Jefferson County, New York, who exhibit a combination of academic and extracurricular promise.

John R. Munro entered Hamilton in 1983, where he majored in government and was a member of the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity. He graduated in 1987, and two years later married Elizabeth “Beth” Ivers, also Class of 1987, in the College Chapel. John and Beth are wholeheartedly devoted to education. He has worked in secondary schools as a teacher, Director of Admissions and Head of School. Beth is a painter who has dedicated her career to teaching art classes to terminally-ill children. John is also passionate about community volunteer and civic work. Their daughter, Grace Munro, is a member of the Class of 2014.

John's father, J. Richard Munro, was the original lead donor to this fund. J. Richard received an honorary degree (LL.D.) from Hamilton in 1986 and served on the College's Board of Trustees from 1989 to 1997.
