The Orth Family Northern Nugget Scholarship

The Orth Family Northern Nugget Scholarship, established in 20008, is awarded to students demonstrating financial need, with first preference given to students from the New York State counties of Franklin, Hamilton, St. Lawrence, Warren, Essex, Clinton, Lewis, and Jefferson; second preference to students from rural counties in Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine; and third preference to students from the New York State counties of Herkimer and Fulton.

This scholarship was established in 2007 by Lyn Du Moulin Orth, in honor of her husband William T. Orth, Class of 1954, his daughter, Laura, Class of 1984, and in memory of his brother, Robert, Class of 1949.

Lyn DuMoulin Orth did not attend Hamilton College. In her words, “Likely I could not have qualified in the 1960s or now; then because I could not have afforded to pay the tuition and now because I was probably not the student that this scholarship will help. I have searched for an institution that taught, cared and talked with young people, because mentoring is crucial to leadership and self-actualization. Deliberately, carefully, I have chosen the very best institution I could find to concentrate on the entire student: Hamilton College. Life experience, some of it as a college teacher, has reminded me that we have real choices, and teachers can help. Many of us from more rural settings do not have economic advantages, but daily we tread the earth, watch the snow deepen, and listen to clear water trickle, nourishing everything it touches. Remembering images like that has often kept my rudder deep in difficult times. So, here’s my hand Hamilton student. Nourish the world you touch.”
