The Mary R. and Stewart L. Magruder, Sr. Scholarship

The Mary R. and Stewart L. Magruder, Sr. Scholarship was established in 2015 by Jonathan C. and Joan Randolph Magruder members of the Class of 1984 in memory of his parents.

Jonathan C. Magruder and his wife, Joan Randolph Magruder, contributed stock he acquired while working for the Allstate Corporation to establish this scholarship in memory of his parents. His father, Stewart L. Magruder, Sr., was a field auditor with the State of Connecticut and his mother, Mary Magruder, a library assistant after a career in nursing.

Stewart Magruder, Sr. never had the opportunity to go to college, but had a life-long love of reading and learning – especially history. Mary Magruder was a strong advocate for education – having trained as a nurse at Columbia University’s School of Nursing at a time when her high school chemistry teacher prevented her from participating in labs because of her gender. Stu and Mary worked hard to ensure that all five of their children knew the value and importance of education. Many a lively discussion at the dinner table was settled when Mary directed one or another arguing child to the “reference” desk – a set of encyclopedias on a bookcase conveniently near the kitchen table. They were deeply loved and are deeply missed.

Originally from East Hartford, Connecticut, Jonathan C. Magruder is a member of Hamilton’s Class of 1984. During his time on the Hill, he majored in government, played varsity soccer and served on the Judiciary Board, the Chapel Board and the Adler Conference, and wrote for The Spectator. Following graduation, he worked in Admissions at Hamilton from 1984-1987. He subsequently received a M.A. from the University of Pennsylvania, a M.Ed. from Maryville University of St. Louis and currently works as a social studies teacher at the Nipher Middle School in Kirkwood,                         Missouri.

His wife, Joan Randolph Magruder, is also a member of Hamilton’s Class of 1984. She received her A.B. in psychology and earned a M.B.A. from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. A health care administration professional, she is currently the president of St. Louis Children’s Hospital.

Joan and Jonathan married in 1989 and have three daughters, Alison, Megan and Caitlin.
