The Frederick W. McGarity Scholarship

The Frederick W. McGarity Scholarship was established with estate gifts received from Frederick W. McGarity, Hamilton Class of 1949.

Following his graduation from Hamilton in 1949, Frederick Walter McGarity earned a M.A. from the New York State College for Teachers in Albany and returned to his hometown of Norwich, N.Y., where he spent his entire career teaching French and Spanish in its high school.

Someone who wrote in response to his obituary commented, “A good man. Last time I saw him, he was reading a book in French. Always a passion for learning.”

Hamilton received undesignated distributions from the Estate of Frederick W. McGarity. Based on the College’s current and long-term needs, College officials asked the Board of Trustees to adopt a resolution designating this gift for endowment per the terms outlined in this document.
