The Metz Family Scholarship

The Metz Family Scholarship was established by Michael G. Metz, Class of 1981.

After growing up in the Syracuse area and attending Phillips Exeter Academy for two years, Michael G. "Mike" Metz attended Hamilton College. The advantages of small class size and personal interaction with faculty and staff at Exeter were the guiding factors in selecting a college.

While at Hamilton Mike earned a degree in economics with a math minor, and played club squash, junior varsity lacrosse, and recreational sports in all seasons. Friends made at Hamilton have remained friends through his life, despite the varied paths that all have taken.

After Hamilton, Mike earned an MBA from Carnegie Mellon University. His career led him into the metals industry, first in steel and then 34 years in titanium. This was surely not an obvious road from Hamilton, but the culture of learning and a broad educational background were instrumental in his success.

Mike believes that education is one of the most important parts of life. In particular, he believes that the breadth of a liberal arts program provides a strong foundation for life, both personally and professionally. The Hamilton community, by nature of its small size and the close relationships developed there, is an excellent environment for learning and growing.

Please note: The named scholarships profiled on these pages support the College’s generous need-based financial aid commitment. These donor-funded scholarships help ensure the Hamilton promise of keeping education affordable through meeting a student’s full demonstrated financial need.
