The Carey Family Scholarship

The Carey Family Scholarship was established by James J. Carey, Class of 1971, and Nancy Carey.

The Carey Family Scholarship was established by James, Class of 1971, and Nancy Carey in honor of his 50th reunion. The Careys wish to support Hamilton’s financial aid program so the college can remain a “school of opportunity.”

Following his graduation from Hamilton, Jim matriculated at Rutgers University where he earned his MBA in Accounting. He served as Vice President and Internal Audit Director at Citicorp until 1983 when he began a nearly 16-year career as Senior Vice President and General Auditor for First Chicago NBD Corporation. In 1999, he began Basswood Ventures Inc., which owns a geriatric care business, and, in 2007, he began Forest Bluff Realty, providing residential real estate services near Lake Forest, IL.

At Hamilton, Jim was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity and represented them on the Intra-Fraternity Council. He received department honors in Latin and was the recipient of the Fitch, Soper, and Curran Prize Scholarships. He continued his service to Hamilton as an alumnus, working with the Career Center and volunteering for the major gifts committee, as a campaign leader, and most notably as a long-serving chair of his class’s Annual Fund and Reunion Gift committees.
