The C. Christine Johnson HEOP/Scholars Fund
The C. Christine Johnson HEOP/Scholars Fund provides support to HEOP/Scholars Program students. This fund was established in 2001 by C. Christine Johnson and by alumni, students, and friends of Hamilton’s Higher Education Opportunity/Scholars Program upon the occasion of Christine’s 30th anniversary with the program.
C. Christine Johnson, better known by colleagues, students and alumni as “Ms. J”, was the director of Hamilton’s Higher Education Opportunity (HEOP)/Scholars Program, whose purpose is to enroll and support low-income students with academic promise. For over three decades, “Ms. J” directed the five-week summer program that gives students a chance to experience college life and academic work before the fall semester begins. This support continues throughout the academic year.
Prior to Hamilton, Ms. Johnson served as a logistics officer in the U.S. Air Force from 1950 through 1970, when she retired at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. She was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal and a Bronze Star for her service in Vietnam. She then worked as a field representative for the State Division of Human Rights. In 1991, she received Hamilton’s Bell Ringer Award. In 1994, she was named “African-American of the Year” by Governor Mario Cuomo for her commitment to HEOP. She retired from Hamilton in 2002, and lives in San Antonio, Texas, where she is an active member of her community serving as an elected member of the "Silver Hair Legislature".
