The Arturo Domenico Massolo Memorial Scholarship

The Arturo Domenico Massolo Memorial Scholarship is intended to support educational diversity at Hamilton, consistent with the College’s mission and admission policy. It is awarded with preference given to LINK Unlimited students and other under-privileged minority students who demonstrate promise from Chicago. This fund was established in 1990 by Arthur J. Massolo, Class of 1964, and his wife, Karen, in memory of Mr. Massolo’s grandfather.

Arthur “Art” James Massolo, Class of 1964, graduated with Phi Beta Kappa honors in 1964, having concentrated in history and German. He was an active member of the Emerson Literary Society. Art went on to earn a J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School in 1967 under a special scholarship which provided free tuition to one Hamilton graduate each year.

Art served with the Peace Corps in Malaysia from 1967 to 1969, and then joined First National Bank of Chicago, where he remained until 1996. He has also served as chairman of the LINK Program, a Chicago organization that assists underprivileged minority children, and has served Hamilton as a reunion gift committee member, alumni association officer, Career Center volunteer, major gifts committee member, and as an alumni trustee from 1990-94.

In 2001, Art was appointed a Charter Trustee of the College, followed by his election as a Life Trustee in 2012. He helped establish a fund to support HEOP student scholars, and generously made a commitment of $1 million to support Hamilton’s Need Blind Initiative in 2010, ensuring that Hamilton can offer admission based solely on merit. Art was instrumental, along with fellow trustee Drew Days, Class of 1963, in establishing the Days-Massolo Center, which was created to foster dialogue and understanding within and across differences through programs and services that enhance the academic mission of the campus while strengthening a community that respects and promotes free and open inquiry, independent thought and mutual understanding.

Longtime residents of Chicago, he and his wife, Karen, now live in Hollywood, Florida. Their son, Arthur R. Massolo, graduated from Hamilton in 1993.
