The Edward N. Carpenter Scholarship

The Edward N. Carpenter Scholarship was established by Margaret Carpenter Jones, Class of 1988, and her husband, Jeffrey Jones, in memory of Margaret’s father.

Although Edward N. Carpenter, Tim, did not attend Hamilton College, he adored the institution and believed in the benefits and importance of the high quality liberal arts education it provides.

Born in New York City in 1919, Tim attended The Buckley School, Brooks School, Oxford and Yale University, Class of 1942. He was a decorated U.S. Marine who served in WWII in the Pacific and fought bravely at the battle of Iwo Jima. Upon his homecoming, Tim led the Wall Street brokerage firm of Jesup and Lamont until he retired from the world of finance in 1960 to work full time as a playwright and lyricist.

For 91 years, Tim led a full life as a devoted friend, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He supported and enthusiastically encouraged his family to pursue passionately education and training in their areas of intrigue and interest. Tim modeled lifelong learning by reflecting on his word of the day, constantly reading, writing, asking probing questions and taking college courses into his late eighties.
Tim was always recognized for his extraordinary principles of kindness, strength as a leader, and commitment to education.

Tim’s daughter, Margaret Carpenter Jones, graduated from Hamilton in 1988 with a degree in political science. She went on to receive a J.D. from Albany Law School in 1991, working in a law office in Massachusetts, and, eventually, as a mediator and consultant. Margaret and her husband, Jeffrey C. Jones, reside in Bloomington, IN.
