The George Mitchell Avery Scholarship

The George Mitchell Avery Scholarship was established in 1971 via the Will of Harriet M. Avery, in memory of her son, George Mitchell Avery, Class of 1943.

George Avery received his B.S. from Hamilton in 1943 and then went on to earn his M.D. from Syracuse University in 1948. While on the Hill, he was a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity. After interning at the Delaware General Hospital and receiving a three-year fellowship in obstetrics at Syracuse Medical Center, he returned to Rochester, NY to follow in his father’s footsteps with medicine. In 1958, he started his own successful practice in Palmyra, NY.
