The William Wagner Rose Memorial Scholarship

The William Wagner Rose Memorial Scholarship, established in 2000 by Rhoda and John “Jack” Rose in memory of his father William Wagner Rose, Class of 1927, is awarded to rising juniors or seniors who have declared writing as a major, with preference given to students who are interested in a career in advertising.

William W. Rose, an accomplished advertising copywriter, was born in Columbus, Ohio. At Hamilton, he was a member of the Chi Beta Sigma fraternity, and graduated with an A.B. in 1927. He completed graduate work at the University of Michigan, then settled in Pittsburgh with his wife, Emogen Stook, and their two sons, William and John.

Bill worked on the writing staff of Walker & Downing Advertising Agency. He later became the firm’s radio director, and proceeded to hold various positions at advertising agencies from New York City to Detroit until his retirement in 1958. His family and colleagues describe him as a “wordsmith” who was “able to say things simply and powerfully in a few words.” Bill died in November 1993. His son Jack, and Jack’s wife, Rhoda, who died in 2014, recognized the important role Hamilton played in Bill’s successful career, especially the College’s emphasis on writing and speaking. They established this scholarship fund in Bill’s honor, and remain devoted friends of Hamilton. Their granddaughter, Thea Spittle, is a member of the Class of 2012.
