The Herbert and Nancy Salkin Scholarship

The Herbert and Nancy Salkin Scholarship, established in 1979, supports a student interested in both studio art and laboratory science. This scholarship was established by Herbert and Nancy Salkin, parents of Jeffrey Salkin, Class of 1981.

Herbert Salkin was born in Brooklyn, New York. He earned his B.A. from Brooklyn College in 1949 and subsequently served in the Korean War. When he returned to the U.S., Herbert pursued a career in advertising. He worked in the art department of NBC’s promotions division and as art director for Computer Profile Marketing before opening up his own art shop and graphic arts firm. Herbert married Nancy Mazur in 1957. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Smith College, she was a founder of the New York Hall of Science, where she was highly respected for her “judgment, enthusiasm, and support.” Nancy and Herb died in 1990 and 2011, respectively.

Their son Jeffrey graduated from Hamilton in 1981 having majored in biology. He earned an M.D. from New York University School of Medicine, and has since worked in private practice as an orthopedic surgeon. Their niece, Lynn Salkin, Class of 2000, is an active volunteer.
