The Richard J. and Jean F. Valone Scholarship

The Richard J. and Jean F. Valone Scholarship, established in 2006 by Dr. Valone, Class of 1943, and his wife, Jean, is awarded with preference given to students who are planning a career in medicine.

Richard Valone, a Utica-area ophthalmologist, was born in Rome, New York. He served as president of Hamilton’s chapter of the Delta Upsilon fraternity and participated in the debate club. Majoring in pre-medical studies, he graduated with Delta Sigma Rho honors in 1943. Richard earned his M.D. in 1946 from the University of Buffalo, where he met his wife Jean. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps from 1948 to 1950 before practicing medicine in Utica for over 25 years.

Born in Buffalo, New York, Jean Fredelake Valone received a nursing degree from Buffalo General Hospital in 1947. She married Richard in 1948 and had five children, including Frank Valone, Class of 1970. Richard’s grandson, Frank H. Valone, graduated in 2003, the fourth generation of his family to become a medical doctor.

The Valones eventually moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where Richard continued to practice medicine for another decade before retiring. He remained an enthusiastic alumnus and booster for Hamilton athletics until his death in 2000. Jean passed away in 2011.
