The Kenneth W. Watters Scholarship

The Kenneth W. Watters Scholarship, established in 1985 by Kenneth W. Watters, Class of 1928, is awarded with preference given to students from the western part of the United States.

Kenneth W. Watters, an investor and attorney, was born in Cleveland, Ohio. At Hamilton, he was a member of the concert choir, outing club, golf team and the Sigma Phi fraternity. Kenneth graduated in 1928 and earned his LL.B from Harvard Law School in 1931. After practicing corporate law in New York City for a few years, Kenneth moved to Santa Barbara because he “found Southern California irresistible.” There he met and married Elizabeth Strong in 1934. They had three children: Elizabeth, Katherine, and Kenneth Watters III, Class of 1962.

Kenneth served in the U.S. army from 1942 to 1946 and was discharged at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel with an Army Commendation Ribbon. He was a partner in several ranching and agricultural business ventures, ultimately settling on a ranch near Scottsdale, Arizona. He turned the ranch’s prospects around using innovative soil conservation and reclamation technology. He stayed in Arizona and founded Watters Ranch and Investment Co., where he was president, and also worked for a time with Canada Dry Arizona, serving as company president. He was an active alumnus, and served as a trustee of Hamilton and a member of the local alumni council. Kenneth died in 1991.
