The Merritt N. Willson Memorial Scholarship

The Merritt N. Willson Memorial Scholarship was established in 1985  in memory of Merritt N. Willson by his daughters, S. Mabel Willson and Mrs. George A. Small, and by his grandson, Robert N. Small, Class of 1943.

Robert Small was born in Syracuse, New York. The son of Edith and George Small, Bob was an Eagle Scout and graduated from Syracuse Central High School in 1939. He matriculated to Hamilton in the fall of that year.

On the Hill, he was a member of the Psi Upsilon fraternity and played varsity football and hockey. He concentrated in economics and English literature, and graduated a few months early, in January 1943, to join the U.S. Army Air Corp. He was discharged as a Sergeant in 1946 and joined Smith & Caffrey as a shop ironworker. He eventually became the company’s president and CEO. Bob died at the age of 90 in 2011.
