The Bates Family Scholarship

The Bates Family Scholarship, established in 2000 by Janet M. Bates in memory of her late husband, George P. Bates, Class of 1936, and his brother, John H. Bates, Class of 1935, who was killed in action during World War II, is awarded with preference given to Hamilton students in their junior and senior years who plan to pursue a career in medicine.

John Hall Bates was born in Warren, Connecticut. He graduated from Hamilton in 1935, and was a member of the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity. John served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After his ship was sunk by enemy fire on February 1, 1943, he was declared missing-in-action for more than a year. Later, he was presumed to have been killed in action.

John’s brother, George Page Bates, entered Hamilton in 1932. He was also a member of Alpha Delta Phi. George graduated in 1936 and served as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy. He went on to become President of the General Public Service Corporation of New York and also Vice President of the First National Bank of Litchfield, Connecticut. He died in 1998.
