Critical Languages Program
The Critical Languages Program is a self-instructional language program that follows the recommended format of the National Association of Self-Instructional Language Programs (NASILP), an association that promotes the study of the less-commonly taught languages.
- The Program requires you to be highly motivated and self-directed. You are responsible for your own learning through careful work with the text, multimedia materials and other learning materials.
- The communicative structure of the tutorials requires thorough preparation and participation on the part of each student. Because the verbal aspects of the language are emphasized in class, your participation depends on thorough preparation. Understanding the linguistic concepts and writing out the exercises is just the first step. Since you are preparing for a class “in” the language, not “about” the language, practice in applying what you have learned is essential to class participation.
- Success in learning the language depends on you. Students enjoy and benefit from the small classes and the interactive and participatory nature of the class sessions. They often comment on how much progress they make in the language and in addition on how much they learned about their own abilities as learners.
- Interested students should read carefully the Student Study Guide for important information on the Program format. Feel free to contact Mary Beth Helderle at 315-859-4776 with any questions. Enrolled students must drop off their course schedules to Mary Beth Helderle in CJ 302 by 4 p.m. the first day of classes so that the class schedule can be arranged with the tutor.
- Generally the CLP does not offer courses beyond second year. Occasionally, due to staffing, there is an interruption in a sequence. Additional languages cannot be added for an up-coming academic year, but will be considered for the following year.
- There is no minor or major available in languages offered in the CLP.
