In the email below sent to the Hamilton community on Jan. 17, 2017, President David Wippman announced the death of Lecturer in Communication Tom Phelan. "I write with the very sad news that Lecturer in Communication Tom Phelan suffered a heart attack this morning and passed away. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Professor Catherine Phelan, and family."

Author Stuart Ewen, a historian and lecturer on media and consumer culture, will present a lecture titled “The ‘I’ and the Eye: A Brief History of Optics and Individualism” on Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 7:15 p.m., in the Bradford Auditorium, KJ. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Consuming Catastrophe: Mass Culture in America’s Decade of Disaster, by Visiting Assistant Professor of Communication Tim Recuber, was published by Temple University Press last week.

Gretchen Gardner ’09 currently lives in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she runs her own communications strategy firm, GMG Strategic Communications. According to Portada, Gardner “works with Argentine and international ventures on shaping their content, branding and marketing strategies to position them for success in global markets.”

Nine high school students from the Urban Assembly School for Emergency Management (UASEM) in New York City visited Hamilton on April 21-22 to collaborate with students and faculty in the Communication Department. The department’s relationship with the UASEM supports student/faculty research on privacy, media and community.

Katherine White ’16 spends a lot of her free time in ice hockey rinks. At Hamilton, she plays goalie on the men’s club hockey team and works as the play-by-play announcer for both the men’s and women’s ice hockey teams. As she says, her winters “revolve mostly around playing and working in hockey.” This year, her summer has revolved around hockey too. With funding from the Summer Internship Support Fund, she is working as a public relations intern for the Columbus Blue Jackets in Ohio.
