As one of the few surveys of Russian elites - perhaps the only publicly available survey -  conducted since Putin returned to the presidency in 2012, the newly released Hamilton College Levitt Poll, titled The Russian Elite 2016, represents a unique resource. Survey data on whether Russian elites support the more muscular foreign policy that has been pursued during Vladimir Putin’s third presidential term (2012-present) have been largely unavailable–until now. 

During an April 5  NPR Hidden Brain Grit,”  University of Pennsylvania psychologist Angela Duckworth spoke about research conducted by Daniel Chambliss, the Eugene M. Tobin Distinguished Professor of Sociology. Duckworth described Chambliss as “one of my favorite thinkers on this topic,” and referenced his extensive research on Olympic swimmers.

Throughout the academic year, there is a continuous flow of alumni coming back to the Hill, sharing their work and life experiences with current students. This week, we begin maintaining an ongoing list of alumni visitors (and will occasionally highlight their on-campus presentations).

The morning sky was still dark as 32 students walked up the Hill and boarded a bus to New York City on April 9. They were on their way to meet with alumni at the asset management/insurance institution AIG and two investment banks, Citigroup and Deutsche Bank, to learn more about careers in finance.

With graduation approaching, it may seem unusual that two senior economics majors have organized a trip to New York City for underclass students to meet with alumni executives at various financial institutions. Ramon Villalona and Rashveena Rajaram, co-presidents of Hamilton’s Finance Club, plan to expand their classmates’ vision of their career options  and assist them in making contacts  during this day-long event. 

American Public Media’s Marketplace broadcast on March 10 began with an examination of the differences between our country’s Federal Reserve policies as compared with other nations. The first commentator in the segment, titled A Transatlantic Central Banking Policy Disparity, was Ann Owen, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of Economics, who observed, “Europe has not recovered as well as the U.S. has from the crisis. European monetary policy needs to be more aggressive.”

Professor of Sociology Dennis Gilbert wrote an essay for the Huffington Post about his experiences working with and for Bernie Sanders in the early 1990s. "Adventures with Bernie," published on Jan. 12, chronicles Gilbert's experiences with Sanders at Hamilton and later as his research director during his first successful run for a seat in the U.S. Congress. 

Tonight (Wednesday, Jan. 13) at 9 p.m., James S. Sherman Professor of Government will present a webcast titled “Continued Struggles in American Race Relations” on the General Commission on Religion and Race (GCORR) of the Methodist Church website. The presentation is part of the GCORR “Vital Conversations” series.

This year the national media highlighted the college’s focus on expanding access and equalizing experiences on campus in several major articles. Outlets featuring these Hamilton policies and programs included The Chronicle of Higher Education, Huffington Post and the Hechinger Report. The college also received broad national media attention most recently with the announcement of its incoming president, David Wippman, via an Associated Press news story.

A Dec. 22 American Public Media Marketplace broadcast titled “How 2 percent GDP growth looks in the real economy” featured an interview with Ann Owen, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of Economics. Owen commented on the relatively small gross domestic product (GDP) growth rate, observing that typically, after a recession caused by a financial crisis, growth tends to be slow initially.
