Peggy Piesche, visiting instructor of German and Russian studies presented a paper at the Ninth International Conference of the Collegium for African American Research (CAAR) held April 6-9 at the Université Paris Diderot-Paris 7 in France.

Visiting Instructor of German and Russian Studies Peggy Piesche presented a paper at the “Black Europe and the African Diaspora” Lecture Series at Vanderbilt University on April 2. In “The Perpetual Other: African Imagination in West and East Germany in the age of the Cold War” Piesche stressed the relations between the uprising African Independence Movements and both Germanys after World War II.

Associate Professor of Russian John Bartle was recently honored by The American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East European Languages (AATSEEL) for Distinguished Service to AATSEEL 2011. Bartle has served as associate editor for book reviews for the Slavic and East European Journal since its fall 2001 issue.

Visiting Instructor of German and Russian Studies Peggy Piesche was an invited guest lecturer at the conference “Museum and Politics – Alliances and Conflicts,” in Karlsruhe, Germany, Nov 4-6.  Her talk was titled ‘Museum. Space. History: New Sites of Political Tectonics and discussed the concept of museum as a continuation and reenactment of a collective historic memory.

Peggy Piesche, visiting instructor in German and Russian presented a paper  at the German Studies Association convention, held in Oakland, Calif., on Oct.7-10. The paper discussed the interactive dynamics between the concepts of cosmopolitanism and education at the end of the 18th century and especially in Wieland’s oeuvre, which shows his fascinating contributions to contemporary political, philosophical and psychological debates with regard to education.

Four Hamilton students participated in the 10th annual Russian Language “Olympics,” held at Syracuse University on April 17. Ethan Ayres, Stephanie Hudon, Grace Lee (all ’13), and Alexander De Moulin ’12 joined undergraduates from Hobart-William Smith, SUNY-Binghamton, Syracuse University, Union College and the United States Military Academy at West Point for a friendly competition in various Russian language activities.
