What do slavery in 19th century England, foot binding in China, and dueling by the English elites all have in common? As Dr. Kwame Anthony Appiah explained, each of these practices was ended due to the mobilization of honor.

Ken Bain, professor of history and urban education at the University of the District of Columbia, came to the Hill on Sept. 29 for a talk titled “What the Best College Students Do.” The lecture was centered around material from his award-winning 2004 book with the same name.

Every fall for the past 19 years, Hamilton students have flocked to the Adirondacks for 46 Peaks Weekend. Their goal – to have a Hamilton student summit every peak above 4,000 feet in the Adirondacks in the span of a weekend. From September 26-28, beautiful weather aligned with a talented group of leaders and scores of strong participants and for the first time ever, they succeeded – a Hamilton student stood atop every one of the 46 over the course of the weekend.

Assistant Professor of Philosophy Russell Marcus published “The Holistic Presumptions of the Indispensability Argument” in the current issue of the journal Synthese. In the paper, he argues against a variety of philosophers who have developed versions of the indispensability argument which, they claim, do not rely on holism.

The 13th annual Fall Fest took place on the Clinton Village Green on Sept. 28.   The Hamilton community and Clinton residents enjoyed an afternoon of entertainment, activities and food.

Hamilton students and faculty attended the New York Six Liberal Arts Consortium Upstate New York Undergraduate Research Conference at Hobart William Smith College on Saturday, Sept. 20.

The 2011 documentary film “Bully” will be screened at Hamilton College on Tuesday, Sept. 30, at 4:15 p.m., in the Red Pit, KJ. The film explores the pained and endangered lives of bullied children, revealing a widespread problem that crosses geographic, racial, ethnic and economic borders. The screening is free and open to the public.

Hamilton’s FILM series will host a Benshi Event featuring benshi Ichiro Kataoka, composer Gabriel Thibaudeau and musicians from Japan, Canada and France on Sunday, Sept. 28, at 2 p.m., in the Bradford Auditorium, KJ.

Hamilton students in the Program in New York opened their semester with a visit to Richard Bernstein Advisors, an investment advisory organization led by alumnus Rich Bernstein '80. The group traveled to Times Square, where they were met by program participant Katherine Gross '16, who is interning with Bernstein this semester. This semester's Hamilton program is being led by Professor of Economics Erol Balkan and the topic is Global Financial Networks.
