  • Delaware Congressman Mike Castle, a 1961 graduate of Hamilton College, will deliver the college's commencement address on Sunday, May 23, at 10:30 a.m. Hamilton's commencement ceremony will take place on the Main Quadrangle, or in the event of inclement weather, in the Margaret Bundy Scott Field House.

  • Professor of Art Steve Goldberg delivered a lecture titled "Double Voicing and Sovereignty in Contemporary Chinese Visual Culture" on the panel, "Bakhtin: Philosophical Worlds," at the Fourteenth Annual Conference of Philosophy, Interpretation and Culture, held at the State University of New York at Binghamton on April 17. as Chair and presented a paper, titled "Teaching Confucius through the Visual Arts," on the panel, "Using Asian Art to Study Asian Cultures," at the Twelfth Annual ASIANewtwork Conference, in Lisle, Illinois, on April 3. 

  • Assistant Professor of History Lisa Trivedi is one of six faculty to have been awarded a Fulbright Senior research Fellowship to India for 2004-2005.  Trivedi will conduct nine months of research in Bombay, Ahmedabad and New Delhi for her project "Bound By Cloth: women textile workers in Bombay and Lancashire, 1860-1940."  The Fulbright Scholar Program sends 800 U.S. faculty and professionals abroad to 140 countries each year. Grantees lecture and conduct research in a wide variety of academic and professional fields.

  • Professor of Religious Studies Heidi Ravven presented a poster of her paper, "Spinoza and Recent Discoveries in Affective Neuroscience," at the sixth annual series of major conferences, "Toward a Science of Consciousness," at the University of Arizona in Tucson from April 7-11. The conference brought together researchers from throughout the sciences and humanities who study the neuroscience, philosophy, biology and cognitive sciences related to the nature, origin, aspects and operations of consciousness. The conference marked the 10th anniversary of the Tucson consciousness conference.

A flight from Syracuse to Atlanta is the first leg of the trip. From Atlanta it is an overnight flight to Santiago Chile and onward to Punta Arenas Chile, where they will arrive late Wednesday afternoon.

  • Assistant Professor of Economics Stephen Wu recently gave two invited presentations, "Is Trade Good for Your Health?" (with Associate Professor of Economics Ann Owen) and "Behavioral Effects of Financial Shocks" (with Assistant Professor of Economics Julio Videras), at Princeton University and Vassar College respectively.

  • Associate Professor of Economics Ann Owen has co-authored "Income Inequality, Financial Development and Macroeconomic Fluctuations," with Murat Iyigun at the University of Colorado, Boulder, in The Economic Journal published in April.

  • The 3rd Annual Gay-Straight Student Pride Rally at Hamilton College will be held Thursday, April 15, at 12 p.m. on Martin's Way near the Beinecke Student Activities Village.

  • Cheng Li, the William R. Kenan Professor of Government was interviewed for an article in Business Week about China's Vice-Premier Wu Yi.  According to the article, her no-nonsense approach caught the eye of former leader Deng Xiaoping, who promoted her to deputy mayor of Beijing in 1988, and deputy minister of trade in 1991. "Deng was looking for capable technocrats -- and she is certainly that," said Li.  Although she makes time for concerts at the Beijing Symphony and a weekly game of tennis, the unmarried Wu is "outspoken and works long hours," said Li.

  • A panel discussion titled "Governing the Adirondacks" will take place Tuesday, April 13, in Kirner-Johnson Red Pit, at 7 p.m. The discussion is part of The Levitt Center speaker series "The Environment: Public Policy and Social Responsibility."
