The Hamilton College Performing Arts Series opens its spring series with Enso String Quartet on Saturday, Jan. 26, at 8 p.m., in Wellin Hall, Schambach Center for Music and the Performing Arts. The program will include Mozart’s String Quartet No. 2 in D Major, Henri Dutilleux’s String Quartet, Ainsi la nuit, and Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 14 in C# minor, Op. 131.

Although many Hamilton students just finished arriving on campus for the spring semester, a group of 55 students quickly turned around and boarded a bus late Sunday night for a 24-hour round trip to Washington, D.C., to attend the Inauguration Day ceremony for President Barack Obama’s second term.

Hamilton College will commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a lecture by Syracuse University Law Professor Paula Johnson and a dinner on Monday, Jan. 28, beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the Tolles Pavilion.  A soul food dinner menu will be served.  The event is free for Hamilton students, faculty and staff but reservations are necessary. In an effort to change our society for the better, former United States Ambassador Prudence Bushnell believes that we must train our leaders at an early age.  While students at West Point, Annapolis and other military academies receive top-notch leadership training, most civilian students are not given these opportunities. To fill this void, Bushnell partnered with Hamilton’s Arthur Levitt Public Affairs Center to create the Levitt Leadership Institute (LLI).

Hamilton President Joan Hinde Stewart announced in an e-mail to the campus community the death of life trustee James T. Rhind ’44, P ’83 ’85. He died on Jan. 16 at the age of 90.

Three students were inducted into Lambda Pi Eta, the national communication honor society, at the conclusion of the fall 2012 semester. The new members are Alex Gioia ’14, Megan McCareins ’14 and Ben Yudysky ’14. They join current member and chapter president Laurie Sadove ’13.

“Knots in the Head: Interview with Michael Glawogger” by Visiting Professor of Art History Scott MacDonald was published in the current issue of Film Quarterly.

In an opinion piece appearing in the Cleveland Plain Dealer on the eve of the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, Lolita Buckner Inniss, the Elihu Root Peace Fund Visiting Professor of Women's Studies, wrote that, “along with other aspects of the discourse on reproductive rights, [Roe v. Wade] forms part of a broader contemporary cultural battle.”

Hamilton College is commemorating Martin Luther King Jr. Day with events this week and next.  Today, employees are volunteering at three non-profit organizations in the Utica area.  Employees were released from regular duties so they could work on group projects at Johnson Park Center, Upstate Cerebral Palsy and the Rescue Mission.

Associate Professor of Theatre Mark Cryer is among members of the Hamilton community who are in Washington, D.C. for President Barack Obama’s inauguration today.  The Hamilton College Democrats left for Washington at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 20, and arrived today at 4 a.m.  Jack Cartwright ’15  is one of the students there to watch the inauguration with his father, Matt Cartwright ’83, a new member of Congress representing Pennsylvania’s 17th district.
