Hamilton’s Theatre Department is presenting Angels in America, Part One: Millennium Approaches, as its spring mainstage production. Communications Office student writer and Angels understudy Alejandro Sosa Hernandez ’26 asked the cast, ‘What did you learn about theatre or yourself from participating in this production?’

The Hamilton College Theatre Department presents the spring mainstage production, Rent, by Jonathan Larson, directed by Professor of Theatre Mark Cryer. Performances of the sold-out musical continue April 19 to April 22 at 7:30 p.m., and April 22 at 2 p.m., in the Romano Theatre in Kennedy Center for Theatre and Studio Arts.

While a concentration in government is not typically associated with a career in acting, Sam Besca ’22 has pursued her passions for both politics and storytelling at Hamilton and will be headed to the Atlantic Acting School in New York City this August.

Although we have all faced the same pandemic and adapted to our own forms of isolation, we each have felt and experienced the past nine months in our own way. Debuted on Dec. 11, the visual, choral Twenty / Twenty project gives viewers a glimpse into both the individual and the collective, drawing from personal responses to COVID-19 in a collaborative and socially distant way.

From a desert in Somaliland to a campus residence hall room, a cast of Hamilton students and alumni will perform a collection of Shakespeare’s sonnets this week in a production that explores the meaning of community during the pandemic that has altered life around the globe.

Theatre adapts, reflects, and, most importantly, survives. The industry is no stranger to abrupt, closure when the unexpected happens. Shakespeare himself lived through several recurrences of the plague, writing through quarantine restrictions, and imagining the new stories, characters, and worlds that would go on to be celebrated for hundreds of years.

Our student musicians share their talents regularly at concerts. And although we can’t enjoy these performances live and in-person, we can take a look back and appreciate these gifted students’ work through Hamilton Encore. Each week, we’ll post a YouTube video of a recent student performance.
