Assistant Professor of Art Rebecca Murtaugh presented a visiting artist lecture at SUNY Suffolk on Long Island on November 12. She showed works that she conceived and created during the past 10 years. The discussion focused on the relationship of everyday experience with the world to her art making process.

Hamilton College's Peter Kosgei '10 finished in first place at the NCAA Division III men's cross country championship held at Hanover College's L.S. Ayres Athletic Complex in Hanover, Ind., on Nov. 22, and has been named the 2008 NCAA Division III men's cross-country athlete of the year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Students in the Hamilton in New York program met with Randy Cohen, "The Ethicist" for The New York Times Magazine. Cohen gave a talk to the group called "Ten Reasons Not to Drive in Manhattan, or, the Highway to Hell." They presented him with a homemade MTA subway line cake.

Students Christopher Bouton '09, Casey Green '09 and Kelsey Rice '10 along with Lisa Trivedi, associate professor of history and chair of Asian Studies, traveled to Siena College on Nov. 8 for a conference of Phi Alpha Theta, the national honors association for history. The students each gave papers, which were well received and reviewed by the faculty from the other campuses. Bouton's paper was titled "The Brotherhood of Thieves Riot: The 1842 Anti-Abolitionist Riot on Nantucket"; Green's was "Post-Revolutionary America and the Republican Mother"; and Rice's was "Misinterpreting the Middle East: Western Biases in Approaches to Middle Eastern History."

Professor of English Patricia O'Neill lectured at Skidmore College on Tuesday, Nov. 18, as a presenter in the college's International Week program. O'Neill's talk was titled "Where Globalization and Localization Meet: The Films of Spike Lee" and was sponsored by Skidmore's Off-Campus Study and Exchanges and the Speakers Bureau.

Associate Professors of Economics Ann Owen and Julio Videras and Scholar in Residence Chris Willemsen have authored an article for the Social Science Quarterly (vol. 89, December 2008). In the article "Democracy, Participation, and Life Satisfaction," Owen, Videras, and Willemsen used data on life satisfaction for individuals in 46 countries.

Nathan Goodale, visiting instructor of anthropology, presented the keynote address at the 8th Annual Montana Anthropological Student Association Banquet on Nov. 15 at the University of Montana. The talk, "Cultural Transmission and the Production of Material Goods: Evolutionary Process through Morphometric Measures of Notched Points," focused on one of Goodale's current research projects that involves contributions from Hamilton students Lara Cueni '08, Lisa Fontes '09 and Matthew Eichenfield '09.
