The Hamilton Outing Club spent three weeks of winter break making their sixth trip to the mountains of Ecuador. Ecuador has more ecosystems than any other country in the world, and the nine members of the group visited many of them, from the Amazon rainforest all the way up to glaciated, volcanic peaks. Dani Forshay ’11 was among the students on the trip, and over the course of four entries will share her impressions and memories.

Professor of English Vincent Odamtten presented the first Dr. Robert Milton Young Memorial Lecture in African American Literary and Cultural Theory on Jan. 27, at the University of Alabama. The recently established lecture series honors Robert M. Young ’90 who died in January 2010. Odamtten was Young’s mentor while Young was a student at Hamilton. In “The Pleasures of Influence and Reciprocity” Odamtten spoke about his professional relationship with Young.

Eugene Domack, the J. W. Johnson Family Professor of Environmental Studies, is the lead author of a study published on Jan. 26 in the GSA Bulletin that documents the nature of unusual limestone (carbonate) sedimentary rocks that record an ancient glaciation during the snowball Earth event.

Edward S. Walker, Jr., '62 former U.S. Ambassador to Egypt and Israel and the Christian A. Johnson Distinguished Professor of Global Political Theory, was interviewed this morning on National Public Radio’s Morning Edition. Walker spoke with host Steve Inskeep about the violent clashes in Egypt and the challenge to President Hosni Mubarak's authority.

A group of sophomores had the opportunity to spend time observing jobs that interest them, thanks to the Career Center’s inaugural career shadowing program, HamiltonExplore.

To launch Spirituality Week at Hamilton, a panel of faculty and campus religious leaders gathered in KJ’s Red Pit for a discussion about spirituality on the hill and the many ways to express it:  Spiritual but Not Religious.

One of the priorities of the recently launched $117 million Bicentennial Initiatives campaign is construction of new art facilities that will include a studio arts building, a theatre complex, and a teaching museum on College Hill Road.

Assistant Professor of Physics Natalia Connolly was recently named the recipient of a $15,000 research grant from the Hubble Space Telescope Cycle E/PO Grant Program. Connolly’s grant is a companion grant to a research program on the phenomenon of strong-lensing, a program for which Connolly is co-investigator.

Associate Professor of English Steve Yao spoke at the Modern Language Association (MLA) annual meeting held in Los Angeles, Jan. 6-9. Yao delivered a paper, "Comparing American Modernisms," on a panel sponsored by the American Comparative Literature Association (ACLA). The MLA conference is the main national venue for language and literature scholars in higher education.

The inaugural lecture of the new Days-Massolo Cultural Education Center will take place on Thursday, Jan. 27, at 4 p.m., in the Kirner-Johnson Bradford Auditorium. The presentation, titled “Diversity in the Liberal Arts College: Institutional Dimensions and Uses,” will feature two speakers: Eric Estes, dean of Multicultural Affairs at Oberlin College and Hamilton College Professor of Anthropology Bonnie Urciuoli.
