In 2016, the American Cancer Association expects 62,450 new cases of thyroid cancer with approximately 2,000 deaths. Although anaplastic thyroid cancer (ATC) is fairly rare, representing approximately 5% of thyroid cancer, it is also one of the deadliest forms of cancer, with most patients dying within 6 months of diagnosis. Martina Brave’17 got the opportunity this summer to explore the mechanisms behind thyroid cancer, as part of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP).

A far-reaching economic policy that impacts countless lives can start with something as small as a grain of rice. Linh Do ’18 is spending her summer working on a research project titled, “Vietnam’s Economy in Transition,” which aims to analyze the effects of the Renovation Policy on Vietnamese rice production. Her project, undertaken with economics professor Erol Balkan, is supported by a Levitt Center Summer Research grant.

Senses of Time: Video and Film-Based Works of Africa – on view from Sept. 10 to Dec. 11 at the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art – explores how time is experienced and produced by the human body. Figures stand, climb, dance and dissolve in nine works of video and film art by seven acclaimed contemporary African artists. An opening reception will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10.   

Margaret Gentry, interim vice president, academic affairs and dean of faculty, announced the appointment of new faculty for the 2016-17 academic year, including nine tenure-track appointments, 17 visiting professors and instructors, five lecturers and two teaching fellows.

Assistant Professor of Psychology Ravi Thiruchselvam recently published an article in Social, Cognitive, and Affective Neuroscience (SCAN). The article presented the results of a study conducted with Jessica Harper ’15 and Abigail Homer ’16.

Nora Klemmer ’17 is spending her summer as an intern at Mercury Public Affairs, a global, high-stakes strategy firm offering a variety of capabilities including international affairs, government relations, crisis management, campaign management and more. Her internship is made possible by Summer Internship Funding 2016, managed by the Career Center.

Hamilton College welcomes the 475 members of its Class of 2020 on Tuesday, Aug. 16, for nine days of Orientation.  Twenty-three fall transfer students and 40 members of the Class of  ’20 who will start in January will also be on campus.
