Students kept busy as they wrapped up the fall semester and over winter break. Read about what some of them did.

National and regional news organizations regularly interview Hamilton faculty, staff, alumni, and students for their expertise and perspectives on current events, and to feature programs and activities on campus. October’s news highlights ranged from coverage of the role of luck in career success to the interrelationship between art and science.

Each year, a core of highly motivated Hamilton students can be found taking steps toward a career in healthcare. What are our pre-health students doing this summer? How did they land their internships, and what have they learned? And how does it all fit into what they envision for their futures?

After two years of supporting virtual conference attendance, ROOTS — Hamilton’s Society for Students of Color in STEM — took 14 members to the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minoritized Students (ABRCMS) in Anaheim, Calif. The trip, which took place from Nov. 8 to 12, came at no fee to students, thanks to funding from the Dean of Faculty’s Office and a grant from Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

George Gescheider, professor of psychology emeritus who taught on College Hill for 42 years, died on June 19, 2022. His memory was honored earlier this month at a Hamilton faculty meeting.

“A lot of the research I do on self-control is focused on the preschool age range,” White said. “If we are going to create interventions to build children’s skills, we want to do it while the prefrontal cortex is developing the most.”

Neuroscience, Dance, Mathematics, Music. Recent graduates Toscana Ogihara ’22 and Anthony Christiana ’22 took this unlikely combination of majors and collaborated on creating an original score for Ogihara’s dance thesis.

Hispanic studies/neuroscience double major Sarah Bargamian ’22 will travel to Spain as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant after graduation.

Last summer, Matthew Anderson ’22 took part in a neuroscience research program at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). In addition to offering research experience, the program created a “pipeline for opportunity.” In the fall, he will return to UCLA to begin his Ph.D. in neuroscience.
